Well good, news and bad news after having the boat out.

Top speed got up to 35 mph! *changed prop 17 to 15. took hydrofoil off)

Bad news is it was only briely. Boat started and sounded like a hit and miss engine. pop every now and then. Only ran 10mph! thn it kicked in up to 35mph then back to 10mph.
Sounds like electricial. What can cause the spark to be intermittent? I pretty sure the CDI boxes either work, or they dont.

Last year one failed and I have all 3 cylinders running on one box (as per instructions from here.)

What next?? any advice

Hmmm, don't know how you are running 3 coils of one cd which only has 2 outputs. Would be interested in seeing the thread that tells how. I guess USMarine, Mercury, and all the boat shops have been ripping people off all these years.

Got a link to that thread?

If this isn't the cause of your problems, I suspect you have a coil going bad, or you have loose wire connections somewhere.

check your stator, i had the exact problem you describe, and on mine when the stator got warmed up it dropped all voltage to one of the modules good luck don

Test your spark if you havent already done so, that could be a fuel issue taking in air somewhere, dryroted hose or loose connection.

To check the stator, you use an ohm meter and check for resistance. If you suspect it is heating up and shorting out, you need to pull the flywheel and look for burn spots.

Do you know how an engine acts when the prop hub slips? Can it be that this is what you are experiencing? What is your rpm doing when the engine is acting up?

Re: electrical problem? 85hp

well its official... I AM AN IDIOT!

We I finally got a chance to check everything from mondays disaster.

Good News!! the fuel line in the rear that goes to the bottom cylinder came off. I could not see that on the water i guess.
Hopefully I didnt score the cylinder from running it dry.

Cant wait to get on the lake!!!!!!

Re: electrical problem? 85hp

Glad to hear you found the problem. :D

BTW, that "fuel" line is a fuel recirculation line and it should have a clamp on it.

Happy Boating,

John
