Re: electrical problem

Fix the alternator. From your description, I assume it does have one, right? Flywheel looks like pictures of flying saucers, with round holes around the outside?

There is a 60 amp fuse in the junction box. Doesn't look like a fuse, but it is. It is a square ceramic gizmo on the heat sink which holds two of the diodes, and a heavy wire attaches to it. If this is your lucky day, it's just a blown fuse. It is a special fuse though. Get it from a dealer.

Would the fuse cause it not to start? Does the starter current go through it?

Re: electrical problem

No, just the charging current thru that fuse. However there is a regular 20 amp fuse between the ammeter and igition switch that will keep it from cranking and/or running.

Re: electrical problem

Very broadly speaking, yes. However on yours it works like an alternator on a car, with a field coil energized by the battery, through the voltage regulator and....never mind, if anybody is intrested, I can type up a lesson on how it works. Shouldn't take me more than an hour or so.

It does not work like the "stator" on the newer outboards which is simply a series of coils energized by magnets in the flywheel. Your flywheel has no magnets.
