1992 Rinker 235 FestaVee with Merc 5.7L I/O; dual batteries with switch on both; shore power when docked with battery charger and frig on.
After running the boat for the day when I shut down the temp gauge often stays at whatever temp it is at (140-150). If I turn it right back on it seems stuck at that spot. When I click the ignition on and off (without starting)the next day the guage drops to zero and works fine. When I was out yesterday I noticed that my tach stayed at 650 when I shut down after docking. Switching the ignition on/off without starting corrected that and it went to zero. I recently changed the t-stat from 160 to 140. While I had the 160 in the temp ran up to 160-170 so I know that the guage appears to work ok. Any idea what is causing this? Thanks

Re: electrical problem.

When you turn the swich off it interupeds the 12 volts that the guage or tach operates on when you turn the key back on when the engine is warm the guage reads that in the morning the motor is cool and the guage returns to the lower reading the tach resets it's self to 0 imeditatly because the engine is not running, both are normal

Re: electrical problem.

many tachs do what you described, it is normal. When the needle doesn't return to zero when the key is in run, gauge getting power but engine not running, then you have a problem.
with the temp gauge, you say you turn the key off then right back on, the gauge still reads 140-150... unless i misunderstand you it's because you turned the key right back on and the motor is still at that temp. The engine will take hours to cool down so don't expect the temp guage to read any cooler when you turn the key to run but engine not running.

Re: electrical problem.

I guess I though that when power was shut off to the temp guage it would go to zero. All other guages like fuel and volts do that. If no power is going to it why does it continue to register when the others don't? I'll keep an eye on it to see if it ever reacts differntly. Thanks for the replys
