Electrical problems after breaking drive belt

Last weekend on the river the drive belt on my boat broke. I ran the boat for what I am estimating to be 30 minutes or so without noticing. I replaced the belt with the one they gave me at the auto parts store, although the replacement appeared to be wider and the ribs are taller. It seemed to fit OK, so I took it out today. The battery had gone dead while running so I had to jump start it. When I first got on the water the tachometer was reading a lot higher than usual. It was showing WOT at almost 6000, as opposed to my usual 4300 or so. Does this sound like something that would be caused by the battery being damaged when it was run dead or does it sound like that drive belt may be slipping? Those were my two theories so I thought I would get some advice. Thanks!

Most re-chargeable batteries thrive on being rundown and then recharged. Usually. So I would tend to suspect the drive belt.....might not be the right one for your engine. Are you certain that it is tight enough???

i think youll find that the tach runs off the coil with nothing to do with the belt.i assume u mean the alternator belt.didnt the motor overheat without the belt turning the pump.????

Re: Electrical problems after breaking drive belt

I suspect that my temp guage is not working because it registers in the normal range all the time and did not go up.
