Electrical Problems

Hello - this is my first time to this forum. Tried to see if my problem was in the archive, but no luck.

Here's my problem - appreciate any help in advance. I have a 12-year old Mercruiser 5.0. Last weekend, it ran just fine - this weekend, it would not start. The only problem I noticed when it would start last weekend was the trim would not raise the engine when I was in shallow water - I had to use the trailer button to trim up the engine, but could lower it just fine.

My first thought when it wouldn't start was the batteries were dead - that was not it - I confirmed that each was well charged. However, when I went to reconnect them, I noticed that when I put my batter selector switch to battery 1 (the starting battery) it would only register 12 volts ( I usually see about 13.4 when I start). When I switched the battery selector to battery 2 (which was not connected) it also gave a reading of 12 volts.

When I turn the ignition key, I get a "quiet" single click. The starter was replaced last year. All the gauges work

Finally, when I was trying to see if there was any obvious wiring issues, I noticed that the red/purple wire coming out from the alternator was disconnected. But it did have a bullet-type push connector. From my research, I "think" this red/purple wire goes to the slave solenoid.

Questions:

1. Since I was getting a voltage reading from my dash gauge from battery 2 even though battery 2 was not hooked up, could I have a bad battery selector switch and/or battery isolator that is causing the engine not to crank?

2. Is the fact that I can not raise my trim up using the up button (but will raise if I use the trailer button) somehow related?

3. Should the red/purple wire from the alternator be connected or not?

4. Since the starter was replaced last year, could this problem be caused by a bad slave solenoid (perhaps related to the bad battery switch/isolator?

Sorry for the long post - and appreciate any suggestions/best guesses as to what is going on and how I should troubleshoot to try to isolate the problem

The trim does not raise the engine, it raises the sterndrive.
Here is how to troubleshoot the trim system.

Re: Electrical Problems

Thanks - (I meant sterndrive... :)

Any thoughts about the disconnected red/purple wire from the alternator?

Re: Electrical Problems

It's the sensing wire for the alternator. Plug it back in.

Oops, forgot the diagram.
