What size of pipe should I use to run 5, #8 wires in. I was thinking that 1 inch would work, but might be a little tuff to pull the 100ft run.

Re: electrical question

1" is barely big enough per NEC. It really depends on the type of wire (THHN, XHHW, etc) and the type of pipe (EMT, PVC Schedule 40 or 80, or flexible metal conduit, etc). Use 1-1/4" minimum. It will pull easier if you go even larger, say 1-1/2".<br /><br />EDIT-also make sure you use a good quality pulling lube. It will make it MUCH easier.

Re: electrical question

It will be EMT pipe and the wire is THHN. I was pretty sure that the 1" was legally big enough, but I am just afraid that it will be a tuff push through the pipe. Thanks for saying something about the pulling lube. That will help!

Re: electrical question

I ran over 200 feet of 3 conductor wire through a piece of flexible black pvc water pipe. I used a mouse and blew it through the pipe with a string attached.... then a cable .... then the wires. Alot of work but we did not use any lubricant (lol it would have helped).

Re: electrical question

Don't push it through. Tie a good strong string(100 line like you use for trot line) onto a plastic bag from the grocery store. Put it into one end of the pipe. Attatch a wet/dry vac to the other end. It'll suck the string through. Tie the string to the wire and pull it through.

Re: electrical question

Fill chart says max of 9 8AWG THHN type wires in a 1" EMT. Prolly wouldn't be too bad of a pull. Lube will help. How many 90's and 45's in the pull?

Re: electrical question

There will be six 90's. They just called and told me they bought 1" EMT. I am going to just lay the wire out and pull to each 90.

Re: electrical question

with 6-90's I hope you have a pull point installed somewhere along the line....Max degree in conduit bends allowed per code from 1 pull point to another is 360 degrees...<br /><br />1 junction box somewhere in there after the 2nd or 3rd 90 should do the trick.

Re: electrical question

Make sure that you use actual "pulling lube" for electrical cable. Soap or grease will degrade the insulation of the cables.
