Electrical Question

I purchased a 1976 85 HP, I thought it was worth what I paid for it even as parts. I figured I'd try to get it to run before I part it out. I need to get a control box, and external harness for it before I can do a compression test. The problem is that the internal wiring harness had some corroded wires. I removed the harness, spliced wires, could not solder them due to corrosion had wicked up through the insulation, I butt spliced and shrink tubed everything. When I hooked everything back up I have continuity from the ground pin on the plug to all of the other pins???? When I unhook the black wire that is connected to the block at the rectifier I loose continuity to the other pins. Is this right??? Is it possible the molded plug end could be bad?? I just received a manual for this motor, checked the wiring diagram. Everything seems to be hooked up where it should be. I found an internal harness online for $100, I didn't want to put much in to this motor until I find out if it runs or not. Any ideas?? I thought about getting an external harness and hooking everything up direct to see if I could get it to Fire up. Thanks Kevin

Re: Electrical Question

You don't need any wiring harness to energize the starter for a compression test.

Once that is performed it will give you an initial indicator of soundness for repair.

Beyond that, it is also possible (with wiring diagram) to set up enough wiring (at least temporarily) to test ignition system.

You also want to look at the oils in the lower unit.

If these three test pass, then it's still can be a toss up as to weather it will meet your expectations within budget.

If you must pay someone nearly $100 an hour to do any testing or repairs, you will surpass it's value in day one.

Re: Electrical Question

To test the ign. system for spark on the starboard side of the switch box just run a jumper between the red and white terminals to energize the system with a battery hooked to the solinoid and ground when you jump the solinoid you should have spark.

Re: Electrical Question

Thanks for the advice, I bought this motor to part out or to get it running and resell. I gave $150 for it, figured I could get my money back in parts or be able to make a little if I could get it running. Thanks again.

Re: Electrical Question

if you find you have good compression...spend the $100 bucks for the new wiring harness...all the splicing, patching etc. to the old harness is worthless effort! you would not believe how much good fresh wiring will wake a motor up! those old wire conductors just won't carry the voltage properly and will probably "short out" resulting in burning up of a key electrical component (rectifier, ignition box etc.) good luck!

Re: Electrical Question

Thanks, That's what I was wondering, if I should spend $100 on this motor.I never thought about what would happen when I put power to these wires, The way they look they will break down when under load. This form is the best. You guys always have good advice, and it's always nice to have someones, other than your own, point of view. Thanks again!!!
