electricial trolling motor problems

I have a 743 Motor Guide trolling motor 43lb thrust. There is a point in the rotation where it stops working. It has blown fuses before and I've had it repaired. I used it Friday. It worked in every position except forward. Sometimes it would work in that position but would stop. I don't know if it is a problem in the trolling motor or the foot control. Any thought or advise?

Time to break out the multimeter and test it. Can you duplicate the problem? Or does it just happen once in a while? When It messes up, see if the head is getting power that will tell you if its the foot control or motor.

Check all the wiring in the foot control. Physically move the wires, especially where they are soldered. Over the years they get stiff and can look like they are making connection but are broken.

I agree with IBNFSHN. The fact that the motor works whether forward or backward indicates the armature and internal windings are OK. I would check the wiring in the foot control.

Re: electricial trolling motor problems

it's possibly the foot pad switch in the foot control going out. i've got a 40lb all terrain minn kota on my smaller boat and just had to replaced this switch last week. it would do fine and then just all at once stop working. after playing with it for a few minutes it would go back to working so i had the foot button or what ever you want to call it replaced.
