Ok so I have purchased the electric ignition and flame-thrower coil. I am going to install it but can someone help me and make sure i am going to do it right.

Electric Ignition - black and white wire goes to negative terminal on coil. black wire goes to the wire i removed from the coil negative side.

Flamethrower Ignition Coil - positive terminal has a wire running from it to a ground. negative terminal has the wire going to the black and white on the electric ignition on the distributor

Am i missing anything? Or should this pretty much get it going?

Re: Electronic ignition and coil installation

What engine??
Just installed a pertronix on my 3.0L, easy.
Follow the ignition instructions for the plate install(it will only look proper in one direction as there is a small cutout for the wiring).
Install the igniter and set the gap with the small plastic shim provided.
Install the magnetic ring over the old points cam(make sure it is properly seated, be firm but gentle as not to break it).
Route your red and black igniter leads away from any moving parts and you should file the small notch in the dist cap as per the instructions.
Reinstall cap and rotor.
Red wire goes to the positive of the coil, black wire to the negative.
Reinstall any wires you removed from the old coil in it's correct position(minus the points lead of course) and make sure you have 12v at the coil + key on, then start it up and measure your coil voltage, make sure it is alternator voltage( 13-14v).
If it is not 12v you will need to bypass the resister wire and run a wire from the choke to the + of the ignition.
Check timing and your done.
The positive on your coil should not have a wire running to ground, it should run to a terminal on the starter.

Re: Electronic ignition and coil installation

Depends on which one you got: Did you get the ignitor II (91146A) or the Ignitor? And which coil Flamethrower or Flamethrower II? Your module should have two wires a red one and a black one. The black wire goes to the coil -, and the red one to a +12V source, but need to know exactly which coil you have, as one uses the resistance wire the other does not. Here is a link to the instructions: http://www.pertronix.com/support/manuals/pdf/ignitor12vneg.pdf Also need to know which engine?

Didn't I just explain all that?
Also it makes no difference if he has a flamethrower 1 or 2.

run a wire from the choke to the + of the ignition.

+ of the coil.

The Flamethrower 40,000V coil can have an internal resistance of 1.5 or 3.0 ohms, a 4 or 6 cyl should use the 3 ohm, and a 8 cyl should use the 1.5 ohm with the Ignitor module The Ignitor II should be paired with the Flamethrower II (45,000V), 0.6 ohm coil.

Re: Electronic ignition and coil installation

Was it electronic already??
It has to have a sleeve to slide over the old points cam otherwise the pickup would not have anything to reference.

Something is not right here. A petronix Ignitor should have a red and black wire, and as Levitnan says something to act as a magnetic pickup that goes over the shaft of the distributor. Is it a petronix?

Re: Electronic ignition and coil installation

If you could give more complete information it would help. Year and model serial#. Electronic ignition from which mfg. Pertronix, Hot Spark or others? What are you starting with and what are you converting to? Can you post a picture? The more you can give the better an answer would be. More is better.
