Electronic Shift Not Shifting

Hey everyone, I picked up a 1969 115hp with electronic shift. I've been having some issues with no spark, my starter was drawing too much on cranking (so I thought) so I replaced it. Still the same issue, cranked over really slow. Pulled the lower unit off to see if that made a difference, and it did. So I drained the oil from the lower unit and it was quite milky and had water in it. Now, I started disassembling it to see if I could find out if maybe a bearing was shot or what. As soon as I got the water pump housing off it spun free, so I lubed it with some water and it all spins good now. But it is still stuck in forward gear. Now, do you think the dog clutch in the lower unit is rusted and stuck from sitting for 2 years with watery fluid? If so, how do I free it up? I tried attaching the wires from the solenoids to a battery (each individual) and one of them clicks, but the other doesnt. Does the engine have to spin a certain speed to get it to shift? Thanks! Christian

MY 1969 85 hp johnson was not running ( still not running) when i bought my boat. Got a manual was going to fix it myself while trouble shooting it the engine would crank over a couple times before the prop would stop spinning as there needs to be pressure in the l/u for neutral as our motors will revert to forward gear when there is no pressure or the solenoid is bad. Good luck with the motor as i found a replacement motor for as about as much as the part thats out in mine

Re: Electronic Shift Not Shifting

Electricity does NOT shift the motor. Hydraulic pressure shifts it. The solenoids only operate a couple of hydraulic flow control valves. The hydraulic pressure comes from an oil pump in the nose of the gearcase. If the motor is not running, or at least cranking, the oil pump is not turning, which means there is no oil pressure to shift it. It should ALWAYS be in forward gear when not running, or at least cranking.

Okay thanks, you guys are awesome, that kills some of my worries about more money on parts. Supposedly this is a newer lower unit on the thing, I can tell someone has been in there. I guess I'll just fix the one broken bolt I found and put her back together. New power pack on order on thursday and the rest of the parts tomorrow, hopefully I can have the old girl up and running shortly.

Before refilling the gearcase, better replace the seals or water will just get back in there and cause problems.

I'm planning on it, though I think my problem was due to the fact that there was one bolt that wasn't even finger tight for the impeller housing and another that is broken off under that. I am going to try to easy out it, and if that doesn't work I'll drill and tap it and see about a helicoil. Thanks!

Whoa!! There is no such thing as an easy out. It ain't easy and it won't take it out. And once you break off that "easy" out, you are up * creek. Just my opinion, after seeing a zillion motors brought to me with easy outs, drills, and taps broken off in them.
