Elgin 12 horsepower....58 or 59 model.

Put it back together this evening, and cleaned the carb. and it started right up. But I need some help:
1. I mixed 8 oz. of 2 cycle oil to a gal. of gas and it appears to be to much oil.

2.When I try to idle it down it sputters and quits.
Is it sucking air some where, or what.

There is a little drop down silver door in the front where there is a jet, does this have to be adjusted when going from high RPM to slow speed?
Or set it and forget it.? Is there a low speed jet any where on the carb.

3. The top cylinder is just a little bit warmer than the bottom is this normal?
Thanks!!!.

A 16:1 mix shouldn't harm the engine at all, lancer.

Using modern, TC-W3 oil you can probably get away with 24:1, but I wouldn't go any leaner than that.

Sounds like it is starving at low speed, unless it just needs warming up.

When you cleaned the carb, did you blow air or push a fiber through the low speed jet all the way into the carb throat?

Not familiar with your carb, but there is a fair chance that the adjustable jet is low speed and merely needs to be backed oout a tad.

Good luck. :)

Well JB,
my little 12 is running great, I was using a W-2 oil. I went to the Auto parts store and got the W-3 oil and split the difference and mixed a patch of 20:1, and put in a new fuel line to the pump, and now it will idle waaaay down.

There is satisfaction to bringing one of these little engine back from the dead.
Thanks for the info.
