I recently got a Elgin 5hp about 1951 to 1952 model (571.58561) with neutral shift.
Gas was more like tar. Upon cleaning I noticed the screens in the gas tank and the sedement bowl gasket were 100% shot.
Where can I get replacement parts? The 90 degree gas tank fitting looks like it might be universal in nature. I have seen some on E-Bay, but they had the On/Off valve built into them and this one already has one on the Carb inlet. And it is probably a good idea to keep it original incase I ever sell it.
If all fails, I will cut the copper gas line in two and splice in a universal filter.
