Have a Elgin outboard 1953 model. It runs just fine but am not sure that it is pumping water. The impeller looks new. What I need to know is where does the water come out. There are holes half way up the shaft which I would think the water should be coming out. If the impeller is good what else could be wronge?

Re: Elgin outboard

You didn't say what size motor you have.

Anyhow, there should be water spraying out those holes. If it is a twin cylinder motor, there is a tell-tale hole on the bottom of the exhaust cover on the side of the powerhead. In reality, the hole is nothing but an intentional gasket leak, which usually is plugged up.

You say it runs good. I assume it must be overheating, or you wouldn't be asking. If the impeller is good, there is an obstruction somewhere, or you don't have it in the water. "tis the season----are you running it in a bucket?

1953 Elgin? I'm betting it's one of those old West Bend built 5hp's That probably has the old wobbler type water pump like my old Sea King :)

Nah, it has a finned rubber impeller running in a bronze cartridge. Impeller has a splined brass hub. They often shed their fins, or the hub comes loose and spins without turning the rubber part.

All too often, when they shed their fins, the rubber fragments go up and cause a blockage in the cooling system.

Salt water will collapse the bronze cartridge, deforming it.

EDIT: I believe I'm correct on that. The earliest Elgins had a sliding vane instead of a rubber impeller. But I think that was gone by 1953

Oh boy. Not good. and those impellers are probably getting harder to find.

jmw642, you might have to remove the lower unit and make sure there are no blockages in your cooling system. Hook up a small hose to the water pick up tube and run water through it and see if water circulates freely.

Is that impeller something Brian Wilcox could remake?
