Just picked up a 1951/52 Elgin 7.5 - Model 571.58751. The pull rope is completely missing. I have taken the whole starter assembly on top and cannot figure out how to install a new rope. Any thoughts?

Speaking generically if the recoil spring is working Get a c clamp wind up the pulley clamp it and thread the rope into it.If the recoil spring is broken Usually you can heat it a rebend
at least the few that I've done over the years worked. You'll need at least 5 ft of rope.
a 7.5 evinrude uses 70".Unfortunately you may have to try a couple of times to get the right tension.

Is that the two cylinder model with the button on top of the recoil mechanism, that you push before pulling on the rope? If so you remove the starter mechanism, flip it over, and remove the screws ( i had to use an impact screwdriver ). You then have to wind the spring before winding the rope on the pulley.
