I have a chance to buy a 7 1/2 Elgin "from Sears".....it is old enough to not have for/rev.....I do not yet have the ser/mod#.....anybody know any history on these motors?
Probably from the 50s.Built By West Bend(became Chrysler in 65).
OK motors, parts are difficult to find but are out there.If you are thinking
of it for an everyday motor there are probably better choices.The 5.5,7.5 or 10 hp E/J motors from the 50s on up for instance.
Thanks...I already a 56 evinrude 30 hp...and I love it....this one will be for a 12' tin boat for the kids to play with in river...guy only wants 40 dollars...and it runs!

I found a 63 7 1/2 elgin...complete, runs, needs prop shaft seal, got it for $20......will fit perfectly on the early 60 12 Elgin aluminum I got for an old shotgun!
I cranked my Grandfather's 7.5 Elgin last weekend. Probably first time cranked since the early to mid sixties. Fired on first pull. Gonna restore it and fish with it the rest of my life. I remember it as an excellent engine shooting across the lake pushing a 12 foot wooden flat bottom that we rented at the lake for 50 cents per day. probably 1960. Possibly 59. It's a 58 model. All I did was clean the points and the carb, pull the rope. Had 45 year old Ac46s in it.
So I hope you fix yours........will be easy and economical to do and give you back more than it took. They are well known for starting every time and a steady idle. What else do we want from a 55 year old American made fishing motor?
