Hey Crew!

Can someone explain this to me like I'm 5? I've always seen pictures like the one linked below, of yachts in foreign lands squeezing into the dock shoulder-to-shoulder with other boats, and no finger piers between them. How does this work? Do they tie to polls forward of the vessel, or tie to the vessels beside them? Stern-tie to the dock only?

Typically there are pilings between the boats. You cross tie the stern to the dock and the bow to the pilings

They tie to one another and also drop their anchor a short distance (very short) then back in. These boats have thrusters front and rear.

It's easy. The rich dude yacht owner tells the captain to take him to Monaco and let him know when the gangplank is secure. :D

Most pics show bow anchors in use as AD said.

pilot boats, divers, multiple anchors, multiple crew, deck windlass's, etc.

in monaco, there are about 20 divers that help out with anchoring as there are about 200 anchor lines in the water

Interesting. I'm a Formula 1 fan and watch the Monaco GP every year. It's always fascinating to see all those monster yachts in the harbor and wonder how they got in place, Your post mentioned the one thing I hadn't thought of - divers. That explains a lot.

I remember a few years ago watching the Monaco GP on Speed. The camera panned the yachts and exposed a young lady sunning in her birthday suit. Bob Varsha apologized profusely about the incident, saying Speed had no control over the TV coverage and images. No slo-mo replay either. LOL

Med Mooring is done all over Europe. Sometimes there are mooring balls out front. It's not just done with yachts. Regular boats in the 30 ft range Med Moore as well. You don't need divers unless anchors get tangled up front.

1) Deploy fenders on port and stbd

2) Start turning like you're going to back into a slip.

3) about 1+ boat lengths out, drop the anchor.

4) back up the quay (main dock), commonly between the boats on each side.

5) Tighten anchor rhode.

6) Cross-tie the stern cleats to the quay.

7) Breast and bow lines to your neighbors.

8) Tension the anchor line and stern lines to get close enough to the quay to deploy the pasarelle (gang plank), but preventing being able to easily hit the quay.

9) Tip dock crew who assisted with lines (If neighboring boat crew assisted, see step #10)

10) Pour drinks

thanks for confirming that I'm OK with not being loaded with $$, and that I don't have to dock my boat in Europe

Great question, I have seen them inches between each other all across Europe and wondered how they got them in there. The big ?? I have always asked myself was a guy spends millions on a barge like that and then you have 12" between you and the guys next door. Just like here In Canada, they build a house for many hundreds of thousands of dollars, or many millions and 3 feet away is your next door neighbour, so close you can hear them putting the dishes away in the cupboards?????? Many places share walls. I did have a Townhouse that apparently the shared wall was our bedrooms. I like being neighbourly but that's a bit too personal for me. I always knew when buddy next door was going to be in a good mood the next morning. Not enough room in Canada I guess.

Sad to say I missed that.
