Replaced both Relays for Power Trim/Tilt last week. One was bad (down). I now have blown the "down relay again. Batteries all show full charges (12.70)....Fuses i've located outboard/Inline. all appear to be fine. Connections (+ / Grnd) appear to be fine. When I replaced both relays, Power trim/Tilt worked great for (2) days of fishing, then the down relay stopped working again. I can switch relays and down works, up doesn't (Opposite). Thus my bad relay conclusion ??. Ive tried trouble shooting through forum and am stumped. What would cause a relay to go bad ??

Hello:

This thread needs to be in the Force/Chrysler forum as that's what it is, NOT in the Mercury/Mariner forum.

*****************************************MOD's, Please move this to the Force/Chrysler forum, Thanks.*************************************************

You cannot 'LOOK' at a connection and assume that it is good.

A poor connection drops voltage but increases amperage, heating the contacts and burning them.

The double relay system uses the Normally closed contacts for the Ground, so both relays ground the motor, when one switches it then sends voltage in that side of the PT motor.

There is a poor ground somewhere to the relay. Find it, clean it, sand it bright, and make it tight.

To 79Merc80:
Thanks for answering another one of my questions. My O/B cover says Force by Merc Marine. O/B serial tag inside of O/B also list Merc as maker. I've tried finding parts for a Force by merc. and it doesn't exist. Can I assume that when looking for parts I should look at Force/Chrysler? I will switch to force ? chrysler forum once I figure out :) I've heard many nightmare stories of the Force O/B ...although besides this relay issue, mine has run amazing thus far...

In an effort to follow forum rules, can someone tell me how to change my post to a different forum. I've gone thru "edit Post" and can not figure out how to change forums! I'm a Newbie and would appreciate understanding and patience, as my goal is to be an active member who follows forum guidelines. Thank you !
