I have a 90 ELTPO and when i first got it (the boat with motor) it idled like absolute crap, would stall when put into gear or when idling slowly .. just general uglyness.

From info I gained here and a merc manual I completed the carb synchronization process.

This by itself made a WORLD of difference. no more rough idle, it never dies when ideling in gear.. big step foreward.

now the new issue is that when in N the engine idles very high, between 1300 and 1500. when the boat is in the water and fully warmed up.

Per the MERC manual i did the following steps.

LOW SPEED MIXTURE ADJUSTMENTS
1. Start engine and allow to warm up (run for several
minutes). Throttle back to idle for about one minute
to allow RPM to stabilize.
2. With engine running at idle speed (in water) in
?Forward? gear (prop on), turn low speed mixture
screw, IN (clockwise) until engine starts to ?bog?
down and misfire. Back out 1/4 turn or more

after backing out the 1/4 on all screws after the bogging quit the engine idles in the 800-900 range, which is still high, backing out the scews more makes it even higher. when at the lowest (still 800-900) when I put it in gear it will idle.. but thats it.. if i start to advance the throttle it just bogs and dies.

furthermore the manual states to do the following :

Holding throttle arm at idle position, adjust idle
timing screw to attain an engine idle RPM of
650-700 RPM in ?Forward? gear. Turn off engine.

turning the screw in (clockwise) has no noticeable effect on idle, untill i get it WAY in then it makes the engine start to miss. turning it out (counterclockwise) increase the idle.. which we dont want of course.

I know im on the right path, im just missing something, missing a step or doing something wrong..

why does it die when i adjust the carbs as instructed? why does the idle adjusment screw fail to lower the idle, but will raise it?
