Email help needed

I run Windows XP and use Netscape as my browser. (I know, I know). Lately there have been so many security updates to XP, I can hardly keep track of them all, but I am currently up to date with them all.

Within the last month, my email attachments can't be opened by recipient(s). They are running all the necessary programs to be able to open them without fail.

Any ideas on how to fix this?

Re: Email help needed

I would log onto Netscapes home page and see if they have any updates to counter Microsofts updates. Other than that I have no idea what to do.

Re: Email help needed

Thanks Stephen for your quick reply. I went to the site and did a search on the problem, no answers. Of course it does have the "low cost" tech support line.

Re: Email help needed

LadyFish,
What 'types' of files are you sending as attachments?? ***.jpg, ***.mp3 etc.

Outlook 6 users have an added feature that blocks file attachments that Outlook deems as potential threats (virus etc). The feature can be temporarily disabled if they really need to get an attachment.

Lowering YOUR security does just that, not a good idea and won't address the issue of others not being able to open your attachments.

Another option is to goto your ISP's web mail, create the email and do the attachment on the web mail site. If Netscape is hosing your attachments, doing the web mail attachment send will sort out the problem.

Re: Email help needed

Ladyfish, are the people that you are sending the files working at the same place? Do they not get them at work and home? It may be their system that is blocking the attachments. Other things to look at.

- File size. Some places restrict file size reception.

- Try renaming the file extension. Instead of a *.jpg, try *.txt or *.zip. The person on the other end can rename with the proper extension that you send in the text of your email or use the "open with" command.

You are using netscape as your browser, but are you using netscape as your email program or a different program. If using a different program, then go to that website's knowledge base to try to find a fix.

Try reinstalling your mail program. There could be aproblem that was caused by a file being overwritten during your updates.

I apologize in advance if I cannot get back to check in on your progress, I have been working major hours in two different cities and may not be able to follow up. Good luck.

Re: Email help needed

Thanks all. I guess I will have to reinstall my browser and mail program. I am only trying to attach *.doc and excel files. After lowering the level of security both on my mail program, browser and isp email recipients cannot open files.

Re: Email help needed

Apparently there is a security setting somewhere blocking my IP. I think this is the problem, I just can't find the solution. :(

Re: Email help needed

it is on the receiving end maybe. your isp has
been tagged a spam/security threat by other isp's?
you have no problems receiving/opening files do you?

Re: Email help needed

LF

I have run into this a bunch of times. One of the security patches from Microsoft changes a security setting in Outlook Express that prevents you from opening or saving files. See if your friend is running Outlook or Outlook Express as their mail program.

In Outlook, go to Tools -> Options -> Security and uncheck the box that says, "Do not allow attachments to be saved or opened that could potentially be a virus" It is the 4th box down.

That should do it. Stupid Microsoft!
