Emergency brake cable?

I am assuming this is the thin steel cable with the S hook that you attach to the hitch along with the safety cables.

any of you guys leave this attached to your hitch by accident and pull away? I did last week. Stretched the s hook out and drove away.

Tomorrow I want to take my boat out and I am wondering if I have locked the emergency brake. Any ideas on what to expect?

Re: Emergency brake cable?

it is possible that there is locked brakes. altho i would expect your going to have to replace the cable as a bare minimum even if the brakes are not locked up. stretching out the s hook strained the cable and may have broken or stretched its anchor point to the trailor out of place. you should take care of the trailor brake issue today before trying to go boating and find out things are truly mucked beyound a quick fix. with the holiday comign its going to be more difficult to get parts and/or people willing to help fix any serious issue the closer you get.

Does the trailer still roll? The only trailer I have that has brakes is a flat bed car hauler. On it the cable pulls a pin that activates the brakes. Does your work the same way?

When the cable gets pulled, the lever that the cable is attached to engages the master cylinder. Depending on the model of brake actuator that you have you will have to loosen some bolts to allow the lever and master cylinder to return to its neutral position.

What brand actuator is on your trailer?

thanks for the input.

Inspired, I called the trailer manufacturer and got them to explain to me how to fix it. It was as simple as depressing a lever, feeding the cable back to its original position and back to full working order. All in, maybe 10-15 seconds to fix.

I did that the fisrt time I put my new trailer into my yard and discoonnected it from the truck.
The old trailer used a small chain. The new one has a skinny cable and is easy to miss. Tore the S hook out of the cable.
Yes, I was aware of how to reseat it.
