Hi, new to the forum. I thought some of you might be interested in seeing my almost finished home-built D4 and my newly aquired $100 dollar project.

You can see my D4 at:

http://www.flyfishnevada.com/boat13.htm

and my new boat at (scroll down to see pics):

http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=202302&highlight=boat

Heck of a deal! The motor isn't running, but it isn't blown. Probably needs a tune up. Either way the trailer is worth a hundred bucks, not mention the boat!

Love the board!

Nice work on the home built. I have a friend that wants us to "try" to make a mold from an old Gheenoe, and then make himself a new one. How were you able to keep the resin wet during the layup process? I like the new boat you found.

Your new project brings back memories of my first run-about in 1973. It was a blue and white 1966, 14' Swiss 6, with a 45hp Chrysler (the model without an alternator). I could run all afternoon on 9 gals of gas. Are you going to restore it to its original color?
Good luck on the project

The home-built is a stitch and plywood boat. I got the plans free from Bateau.com. It looks so smooth because I spent many hours fairing the hull. The interior isn't that pretty.

As for the Taxas Maid, I will eventually restore her to the original clors or a close proximity. My first boat, a Shasta, was blue just like this one. I will run her as I restore her. She needs a little TLC to make sure she doesn't detereorate, but she is in incredible shape considering her age. As soon as the motor gets running, I will put her in the water where she belongs.

Anyone have any idea what kind of seats this boat had? No indication of any mounting of seats prior.

Thanks Crab!

The D4, or Otter as I call her, is 7'10" LOA and 3'10" beam.

Re: End of One Project, Start of Another

She is supposed to weigh around 60 pounds, but I used way too much epoxy due to my inexperience. I would guess she really weighs in at around 100 pounds.

As far as capacity, she could be able to carry 2 or 3 or between 400 to 500 pounds.

Goe here to see more:

http://www.boatplans-online.com/proddetail.php?prod=D5

They have all kinds of plans available from little prams like this to open water capable boats over 20'.

I also built a D4, and I had me(230#), my brother(250#), and my sister(200#) in the thing at the same time while screwing around in the pool. It still had about 2 or 3 inches before it would swamp, but good luck rowing with that much of the boat under water. Also, these boats make good sleds when pulled behind a snowmobile, just make sure to avoid stone driveways ! Oh well, ain't nothing a little more epoxy won't fix!
