Engine alignment

I am replacing my lower unit (2001 Alpha One Gen II). My question is this: since the drive has only 85 hours on it and I am not going to remove the upper unit when I install the lower, do I need to check the alignment? My service manual says to check alignment every year or 100 hours. Any input is appreciated.

Thanks, JB

The powertrain is a 3.0 4cyl 135hp mercruiser in a 2001 Stingray 180LX.

Re: Engine alignment

While you may not HAVE to do it, if you plan on doing your own work in the future it would be worthwhile to buy the alignment tool so you can always have it on hand. It doesn't hurt to check the alignment whenever you have the outdrive off, and it only takes a couple of seconds to check.

Thanks for the info. I plan on buying the tool. It's the new design and I can get it for $49.99 plus shipping, not to bad. I'll check the alignment in the spring ,by then it should be closer to the 100 hour mark.

JB

Re: Engine alignment

One question, why are you replacing the lower unit.
If it's due to a failure of the lower, don't expect the upper to be in good condition.

I'm replacing the lower unit due to damage. (struck something underwater and chewed up the prop, bent the skeg also. No fluid leaks or cracked housing just a small dent in the front of the prop housing).

JB
