engine alignment

What is the best way to make sure your outboard motor is straight on the transom if you have a jackplate? My boat is unstable at higher speeds and I think the motor is not exactly plumb with boat. Standing behind the boat (with boat level) it looks like motor (powerhead) is tilted slightly to the port side. At higher speeds the boat rocks back and fourth and bow moves left to right (gets worse with light load). Any help is greatly appreciated.

Motor - 1994 Evinrude 225
Jack Plate - Rite-Hite 10" set back
Boat - 1995 Champion 204

Re: engine alignment

There are several ways to measure and determine this. One way is to measure from the widest point of transom bracket on bottom to the bottom edge of boat on right and left side to determine what difference is.You can also pick a spot slightly under transom bracket at far end of boat on right and left sides the same distance up from bottom edge.Draw a line from these two points across transom under motor bracket .then measure from line to transom bracket bottom on right and left side to determine distance off. Most dealers will use template to mark transom before mounting.

Re: engine alignment

Thanks OB. I will do some measuring this weekend. I hope I can figure out why this boat is so unstable.
