engine comes up

Not sure if this is in the right group or not. If not feel free to relocate. But i took my project 1975 glastron out for a quick trip yesterday. I quickly found out that if im in reverse and give it any throttle at all it slings the engine right up out of the water. I know this is not normal but without a power planer i have no idea what to do. Ive never operated a boat without a power planer. It has a mercury 650 65 hp

No power tilt/trim?

There should be a latch to lock the motor in the running position.

If it has power tilt/trim then there's a failed valve or its out of fluid.

That motor should have a spring-operated lever and hook, to latch the motor down in neutral and reverse. Look on the midsection, in the front for the lever and at the tilt pin for the lock.

Looked for a long time and couldn't find a pic of it for that motor...

Examine the area of the pin used to adjust the running angle of the motor. You should see a double "claw" that can pivot to trap that pin. follow its linkage and you should find a spring and the lever to flip between locked and unlocked. The spring holds it in the selected position.

Some people leave it unlocked running fast so the motor will get kicked up if they hit a log. If you see a waterski show where they run a boat up the jump ramp they will have it unlocked. So there's nothing wrong with running forward with it unlocked. But in reverse the prop comes out of the water and you may not be getting cooling system water.

Put the motor in forward and try to lift like it's doing in reverse. It should be free to lift.

Has the lower unit been off? The shift shaft has a reverse lock cam than must in the right position or it does what you're seeing. There is also a part in the midsection that acts between the reverse lock cam and the rod up to to the hook.

I've saw the hook in question. But I saw no way to manually lock it. However I'll look again as soon as the weather permits

I know this reply is way late but I finally fixed this issue by adjusting the Lindsay Fr for the lock mechanism. Thanks guys!
