I just purchased a 2003 SX-195 and it is my first I/O boat. Do any of you use the extra space in the engine compartment for storage? If so, what are you doing to contain the stuff and what kind of stuff are you storing? What kind of temps should I expect in there?

Re: Engine Compartment Storage

I've got quite a bit of space in mine. There are nets on both sides of the engine to keep things off of it. You can definitely store stuff there like life jackets, tools, rope, anchor, basically anything that will fit. You want to keep the water/moisture factor in mind though and be sure that you don't put things in there that you don't want to get wet (unless they're in a protected bag or something). Not positive on the temperature factor, but assume that it can get pretty hot in there, especially on longer runs.

Thanks! Do the vests you store smell like gas?

I have not noticed any gas smell. If you smell gas back there, there's a leak. Also, the warmth from the engine tends to dry life jackets fairly quickly. I've been thinking about getting large tubs to put back there to keep things orderly, at least on one side. I'm planning on putting my porta-potty on the other side for my grand-daughter on longer outings. It's stored away in my pop-up camper right now.

I'm toying with the idea of installing a 10" sub and amp back there, but I do plan on keeping the life vests, anchors, dock lines, flares, etc back there as well.

Good stuff! I was thinking about storage chest on passenger side and using to anchor points to ratchet strap it secure. I was also thinking about amp and sub back there!
