Does anyone know the purpose of this particular item?

#25 in the picture below:

While transferring the coupler to my new engine I noticed this piece was missing as compared to the diagram. What purpose does this serve?

Anyone have any horror stories as to why you should never run without the tiny "bumper" as the manual calls it?

They prevent excess flexing and vibration of the coupler. Why would you want to run without them or need to hear horror stories. The ones that could tell the stories probably don't realize what caused their problem to begin with.

So.....it's sounding like you have the engine all back in and you realized that you did not put the little rubber "bumpers" back in?

Uh-oh, When we did a flywheel and flexplate swap when we got our new engines we saw nothing like that. Are we going to need to strip them back down and buy/install those bumpers? We have merc 255 CID's and Volvo 280 Drives.

Re: Engine Coupler - Rubber Bumper

My concern is that there is only one. I am trying to make sure there should only be one and that it's in the right place. It seems too small to make much of a difference, but what do I know, I'm not a marine tech.

If I go by the part diagram, I should be fine with just the one.

Just wanted to know if anyone really knew of any instance where there was an issue. Kind of like people burning up exhaust flappers and not replacing them. Some don't worry about them, some do.

Using that logic, you would only need one rod, and one lifter.

The drawings are not assembly drawings. If you go to item 25 in the parts list, you will see that there are 3 of those rubber bumpers, and 4 rods and 8 lifters ...............................

Re: Engine Coupler - Rubber Bumper

Well, looks like a bad case of coincidence that there was only one bumper on the flywheel on disassembly, and one on the diagram. Looks like someone along the way felt only one was necessary...

I understand where you are coming from, Don. The issue is, until I picked up this boat, it had only seen maintenance, however infrequent, at a local "respected" marine shop. But, since rebuilding this boat, I've found so many shortcuts taken by these guys. And that's to my "untrained" eye. If a good marine mechanic looked over it, they'd probably laugh.

In any case, things are going back together smoothly. I just like to bounce these questions off everyone here because I'll never find any good advice locally.

Thanks for the replies everyone.
