Hey everyone. I was wondering what would be the easiest way to paint my engine covers ? Which grit sand paper would you use and would you spray between sanding ? And what paint would you use ? Its only a small job, 2 engine covers. So maybe i could get it in a spray can ? Can I use automotive paint ?

Cheers. Terry

Hey Terry, welcome to iboats. Check out this link.............My Restoration

Its my restoration of a 62' Evinrude. It goes a little further than you flan on doing, but the work I did on the cover is in there.

Here is the finished result....

I used acrylic laquer (automotive spray), but I dont even know if that was the best choice.....I will let others chime in.

I sanded it down first and cleaned it really well. I primed it with maybe 3-4 coats, then painted it with a few coats of white followed by the painting the taped off blue areas........there is a TON of clear coat on there too 8)

Terry, Mercury used Phantom Black Laquer for most of their motors. OMC used enamel (I think). You should be able to buy OEM paint in a spray can. it will be ~$10 a spray cay, I would think. I used gloss black enamel on my Merc. it is not showroom quality, but it was cheep.

Use 400 grit wet/dry sandpaper initially. Prime with Zinc-Chromate primer. Sand with 1000 grit between coats, if you want to show off.

If you are only painting the covers, there is no need for Zinc Chromate primer. Its above the waterline, and its not aluminum.
