Engine cover

I want to clean up/ fix up my I/O cowl. It is a fiberglass cover (thats it, no sound absortion material, no pad, no carpet). I am thinking about glueing on the inside of it a sound absortion material (the thin foil ones sold at Lowes..the name excapes me right now), and either carpeting the outside or putting padding and a vinal cover/pad on it. Would carpet or a pad be better??? What type glue should I use on the foil insulation?? Any other ideas??

not sure what the sound insulation from Lowe's is like, i would just be careful of any heat rating it may have.<br /><br />we generally use sound insulation obtained from Lewis Marine http://www.lewismarine.com/index.htm <br /><br />it's called WhisperMat acoustical insulation. i think this link will get you there. http://www.lewismarine.com/product_popup.php?figurenum=6178&stocknum=WM1000-25 <br /><br />i believe it comes in 1/2" and 1" thick..<br /><br />they make a clip system also where you glue the clips to the underside, with barbs that go thru the insulation and mechanically fasten. it saves from a glue job peeling down the road from heat.<br /><br />i suppose you can do it in conjunction with or just use straight liquid contact cement. we use the liquid stuff all the time for carpets and other projects. just be aware that you need to use it properly, wet both surfaces, let dry, then stick. and that it will soak thru thinner, absorbent materials, such as some of the lighter bass boat carpets, unless your careful. <br /><br />you can also get vinyl with built in batting on the back for the outside if you prefer that to carpet.. we do use the different 3M spray adhesives on occasion, and they work very well, but can get expensive in a hurry and definitly don't have the holding power of good old fashion contact cement in a can..<br /><br />have fun
