howdy, my engine bogs @ WOT or anything above the high idle for warmup.
when i try to shift into gear the engine dies. it is a trick to start it and then shift and then get on the gas.

when @ WOT it just sputters and coughs and tries to die. when you throttle back down just a bove idle and then throttle up quickly, it tries to rev up but then bogs again.the boat wont move but about 10 knots.

engine also starts hard. i have to use ether to start when cold. but when warmed up, will start at high idle only.
there is fuel coming from the air silencer. i removed the silencer, and it seems to be coming from the drain hose that comes from the base of the reed block.( i guess its a drain hose. its on the lower port side of the black plastic air cover/silencer.)

i have fuel pressure at the carbs. when i crack the lines, the fuel sprays out.

so, is it carbs, i dont think its a matter of timing because i have the excess fuel leaking out. are the carbs letting in too much fuel and killing the engine?

If you're going to spray anything into the carburetor throats, DO NOT use starting fluid (ether) as it has no lubrication qualities. Use some premix fuel (gas/oil) in a spray container.

Remove, clean, and rebuild those carburetors, using complete carburetor kits.

roger that -

no ether.

i swapped out carbs from an 85 140 (that had a thrown rod) and my engine started on the
2nd turn of the key. amazing.
it idles now.
smokes a lot less, and i can also put it in gear at idle!!!

i am on my way to the shop to get the full rebuild kits for the original carbs.
i will rebuild those since they are out and on my bench. i will run it today with the swapped carbs, and then probably put the rebuilt ones back on the engine in a few days.

thanks for the help! god i love these forums.
