I have a1981 75hp Evinrude, the engine will die as soon as I shift into gear, I have rebuilt the carbs, syncronized, set timing both low speed and high speed all to spec according to the manual, on the water and in neutral the rpm is 750 but as soon as I shift into forward or reverse the engine will die. Engine runs smooth at idle and in neutral, and runs good at low, mid and topin speeds.

How are your compression readings? Sounds like you are dropping a cylinder.

Try pulling the plug wires one at a time while running and see if there is one where there is no or little difference. Use insulated pliers or give your neighbor a beer and let him do it.

Here is a link to a troubleshooting guide that may help. Just hit the download button, but be patient, it is a large PDF file:

I failed to mention that I had checked the compression and all three cylinders are 120

Factory specs are 750 in gear. I'm having a similar problem with my 76 70hp, and suspect an air leak in fuel lines or other fuel delivery problem, but haven't solved it yet. When you say it runs fine in low mid and top speeds, you mean in neutral I assume?

Set the idle speed up enough to be able to get it in gear without stalling. Then reset idle speed to about 700 while running in gear. It will speed up a but when you go back to neutral.

Re: Engine Dies in Gear

also it has to be set with the lower unit submerged. on muffs it will idle faster than in the water, as there is no back pressure on the exhaust.
