Engine dies in reverse on Muffs - Question.

After replacing the entire exhaust system on my 5.7L Alpha One Magnum, is started the engine on the muffs running on the trailer, and attempted to put it into reverse.

The gears grind slightly then it causes the shift interrupt switch to enable. It was working fine before I replaced the exhaust, so do you think this is caused by me removeing the 3 bolts that the shift linkage frame holds on the starboard exhaust elbow, or do you think I'm looking at a shift cable?

I've never attempted to put the engine in gear on the trailer until yesterday; I read the adjustment instructions and I'm confused as to if the shifter needs resistance (in the water) for it to shift into gear effectively. Do you have to be in the water for it to shift into reverse correctly?

Everything shifted PERFECTLY all the time with now issue before I replaced exhaust (I know that doesn't mean much).

You shouldn't really do it on land, but if you do then give it a nice solid pull/push to gear - don't let it sit and chatter.

It's difficult sometimes to shift the outdrive when out of the water. The lack of resistance on the prop tends to keep the clutch from engaging. Like oldjeep mentioned, try to shift briskly to avoid the gear chatter.

Make sure the prop quits spinning before changing from forward to reverse or (vise versa) as it can get going pretty fast with no resistance.

I think you are best off just resetting the shift adjustment then taking it for a test dunk. If you adjust it carefully, then bring your tools and the instructions with you to do a water test you can practically guarantee success!
On the other hand if you just adjust it and bring the whole crew out for a ride, certain failure. Murphy's Law.

If you have not moved any adjustments, put the boat in the water and see if it still stalls. The most likely culprit for stalling in reverse is the lower shift cable.

Took the boat to the lake this weekend, and it performed flawlessly in the water. Shifts perfect.

So lesson be learned, this is something that might not work well on the trailer.....
