engine dies when throttle handle is not put far enough

1988 Searay 268 dies if you do not give it a far enough push into gear, rev and or fwrd. Because of this, the engine dies all the time and when you get it into gear, it goes with too much power. Help.

Shift interupt switch adjustment. Possibly a stretched lower cable.

Had this happen to me on a boat I previously owned. Got worse and worse over time until I couldn't get into gear at all without it killing the engine. Had to have the throttle cable replaced which wasn't a cheap repair.
