engine disengages when increase in power

I have any 1989 omc cobra in my bayliner 2150 runs fine until i increase the power to get on the plan then the boat losses power but the rpm increases when i decrease the rpm the boat works fine until i increase power can anyone point me in the right direction to solve this problem

Is there a big clunk when this happens? like you have hit a log?<br />If no clunk, just a smooth slipping, it could be a spun propeller hub -try another prop.<br />If there's a big clunk I would suspect your lower shift cable is failing and has destroyed the lower unit gears...<br />see this if it's disengaging with a clunk:<br />www.hastings.org/~stuart/cobra/

Prop is #1 suspect,next is the engine coupler on the flywheel.You don't mention clunks,just slippage.<br /><br />Clunks are a whole other subject (I think all the red cables are gone {or were they black} ?<br /><br />DHP
