Engine doesnt even try to start

Hello,

I just got a 1997 Yamaha (VETO) 40HP this weekend and hooked it up to my boat.
I tried to give it a test start but it does nothing, it does not even try to start, the startmotor wont turn. I checked if it was stuck but no, i could move it freely.

All i did was connected the shift/speed wires and the big black plug on the motor. And ofcourse the battery.
The trim&tilt works fine, the ignition oil light goes on on my rev gauge, but the startmotor wont run

Anyone have any idea? i already tried a diffrent battery.

get a jumper cable hook to positive stud and other end to a full charged battery if it spins you know its not starter

make sure you have a good ground. a faulty ground can be the cause for a lot of starting problems.

make sure the motor is in neutral .......

Shift is in neutral,
I just connected the startmotor straight from the battery and it worked fine.
The fuse is also intact. but still nothing when starting with key

Check the selenoid, it might be bad. Check and see if you get current to the selenoid when you turn the key.

Check that the neutral safety switch is adjusted correctly and working.
usually it is at the controls.

Do you have a lanyard (safety kill switch)?

I thought the kill switch was only there to kill the spark to the plugs, not the entire electricity to the engine.

GET THE MANUAL.. Then problem solved.. Good luck.. You can go to ebay.com or amazon.com to find it..
