I have a 1968 Evinrude that doesn't run with the cover on. If I take it off it runs fine but I have noticed smoke if the cover is on. I think it might be a seal problem but not sure. If so how much do you think that could run????

Sounds like you have an exhaust leak. You could probably change it yourself with a good TM.

Re: Engine doesn't run with cover on

There is probably a leaky gasket that's letting exhaust into the cowl (cover). The cowl fills with exhaust and the motor chokes on it's own fumes. Usually this is the gasket(s) between the powerhead and the tower housing. That means removing the powerhead to replace. Sometimes it's the exhaust cover gasket(s). That may mean pulling the powerhead, may not. You need to list your outboard's year, make, model, and horsepower so people know what motor you're talking about. The parts are cheap. The labor is not. Just how much labor is involved depends on what motor it is. When was the last time this motor had a thorough tuneup?

Sorry about the lack of info.

Year 1968
Model # 65853B

Would it be a hard to replace the head gasket? I'm pretty good at fixing things but I haven't really done much to the motoras of yet.

It wouldn't be the head gasket. More likely the gasket between the powerhead and the exhaust housing on the midsection. It could also be an exhaust cover gasket. The first is a fairly good-sized job to change. The second might not be.

Run the engine with the cover off and see if you can tell where the exhaust is leaking.

Before you start tearing into the motor, get it running (with the top off), then get a long screwdriver and touch it against the motor body and each of the spark plug boots (one at a time).

I had the same problem with a 10 hp; left it running while I put the top on---promptly quit. The plug boot+wire shorted against the fiberglass cowl. 99cent fix.

When I'm running the engine should I use the muffs or put it in a barrel. I would think a barrel to simulate it as being in the water. Also where is the the exhaust gasket anyway? I have the manual but its written in mechanic english which I don't understand.

Muffs or barrel won't matter (but do use something!). Just get it running without the hood, then try putting the hood on while it's running. If the problem is electrical, it will die immediately. If the problem is exhaust gas, it will take 5-10 minutes to die.
