I am parting out a boat with a volvo penta 290. I have all the parts to install a crank driven water pump along with hoses. For those not aware of the 290, the pump sucks water through the outdrive before pumping into motor. Is there any reason i cannot remove the impeller from my alpha and run the water pump from the motor?

A belt or crank driven water pump moves more water then a Alpha. Your probably going to create some vacuum pulling thru that small of a tube. Suggest installing a thru hull

Doesn't the alpha require water being pulled through it to cool the upper unit? Its acually an se116 sei outdrive but same concept.

Again you asked the question

I tried to answer your question

If your question is
Doesn't the alpha require water being pulled through it to cool the upper unit?

Then I will say, yes but only to a point. The drive does like cooling just as every drive, but it does fine if disconnected and the water does come thru it without a pump, just from going thru the water
