engine flush (hose collapse)

I flushed while in the water and the hose started collapsing but it didn't overheat so water was still circulating. Is it ok to keep flushing if hose squeezes together or will it squeeze tight enough to block the water from circulating? I didn't rev the engine by the way, idle only..... I stopped flushing because I was afraid that the water would not be enough. I then ran it in the salt water w/out the ears. circulated fine so I know I didn't damage the impeller. The water sounded like it was still circulating anyways but I just want some opinions.... I have heard of this in other threads

Which hose is "the hose" you're talking about?

If your hose from the inner transom connection to the raw pump collapses you probably either have the wrong type of hose (it should be a structurally "stiff" hose) and/or you have some sort of blockage in the water pickup.

It shouldn't collapse....

The garden hose hooked up to the ears......

the engine was already warm prior to running with the ears so if the hose had lost all circulation due to the collapse then it would have heated up quickly and possibly overheated, right?

Re: engine flush (hose collapse)

I have used my garden hose many times to flush my 454 Bravo and did not have that problem. It's possible that the "ears" were leaking a little. You must have a really good leak free fit...

try Turning the water on all the way (maybe you already did that)
Clearly your water flow rate doesn't equal what the raw pump is demanding.

I wouldn't run it long that way....

I have also used a large wash tub filled with water and a short piece of hose connected to the "ears" with the other end of the hose submerged in the tub with good results.....don't run it long though.....The water will get hot!

I also do it that way when I want to "winterize".......... I put 50/50 mix in the tub.

You need to have enough flow from the hose so you do not overheat engine. You can use a better quality hose with a thicker diameter. I have had this problem too. I have let the hose hang on my swim platform ladder to make a nice even loop down to the outdrive so it would not kink.

It would heat up gradually because there is still water in the cooling system. Once it gets hot it takes even longer to cool off!
