Hello. I recently acquired a slip at Mt. Sinai marina after many years of trailering my 22' boat. The drive on my boat is a 5.0L cobra, 1988. The engine and drive was always flushed after every outing. Now with the slip it is almost impossible to flush at the dock, for the drive cannot be reached, although fresh water is available. Is there anyone with some suggestions on any modifications or procedures that can be used to flush some of the salt water out of the engine at the dock. Thanks in advance, Neil.

Does your boat stay in the water now? Maybe you could trim the drive up and attach muffs to it connected to the fresh water hose. Then lower your drive and run the engine for a while. That would be better than nothing.

You need a fresh water flush kit. That'll allow you to flush while it's sitting in the water.

Won't work with a Cobra since the impeller is on the drive.

The plumbing is a little different for drive mounted pumps (Alpha, etc.) but it can be done. A check valve keeps the water from flowing from the drive while you've got the hose hooked up.

Where would the check valve be installed?

What is a fresh water kit?

A fresh water flush kit allows you to run city water through the system without using muffs on the drive. You can do it with a pretty simple "T" and check valve setup with engine mounted water pumps; Perko makes a pretty cheesy setup for that but you're better off DIY with bronze than the plastic kit they have. While you CAN plumb this type of setup for a drive mounted pump, you can't run the engine with the drive out of the water or you'll burn up your impeller.

For a drive mounted pump you're better off going with something like Superflush. With this you don't even have to run the engine. They're pricey, but they work.

Walk the docks; see what your dock neighbors are doing and/or talk to the local mechanic. There's a few ways of skinning this particular cat.

I wonder if you can have issues with the impeller if you close off the output.
