engine has very low idle

i have an 82 88 special,the idle is very low and will stall if i don't manually rev it, but idles fine in driveway with earmuffs(????) do i need to adjust carberator or is there a high idle adjustment somewhere?

You should have an idle ajustment somewhere on the motor. I am not that familar with that motor but check at the bottom of the arm where the throdle cable connects on the motor and see if there is a solted screw with a spring on it if so turn clockwise to increase idle. The motor will idle at a highter rate with the muffs on it than it will in the water with the backpressure and being in gear. It should idle about 650-700 rpms in gear in the water.
