Anyone have any suggestions/plans/pictures of a hoist that I can make to lift 350ci chevy engine in 2357 Carver Montego which is on trailer. Don't have room in cockpit for a standard engine hoist. Need to use a gantry type or A Frame with beam that stradles engine compartment. Gunnels are close to foot wide and pretty sturdy. Considering putting couple of 6x6 pieces on top of one another(or cinder blocks)on each side of gunnel, then running pipe beam across. Otherwise need to build frame on outside of hull, mounted on the ground and figure out how to fasten beam across.

Thanks

If you have access to a carport or garage you could use a block & tackle assuming the roof beams are adequate.

I've also seen it done with a hired forklift.

Aldo

wjob
we did all of are pulls buy backing in the garage and then pulling the boat back out and lowering the motor afterwards

i have a 1 ton beam and trolly but i cant put it high enough outside to feel safe rolling the trolly with a motor on it

i use this setup to carry into buildings to repiar drives of large machines but i hang it on roof beams that are not going to move when i start rolling a 1500 pound gear box

i seen some pretty wild things happen that you dont expect when you start moveing the load after its lifted when you setup temporary beams

tommays

This is how I removed the engine from my Grady........I built the 'A' frame out of 4x4's and 2- 2x12's. It wasn't very expensive........and I borrowed the hoist from a friend.

If you know anyone with a forklift, just have everything ready to unhook, use a chain to rap over the tine, lift up the motor and drive the boat out from underneath it. Lower the motor into a trailer/van/pickup.

A hanger works good. When I lifted mine out had to take it to the airport.

Just click on FreeBeeTony's "A Frame" link above - it has a good picture.

Just one additional note.........make sure you make it high enough..........when I lifted the engine out....it was just high enough to clear the transom when I pulled the boat out of the way!

It doesn't take much to reach that limit......I think it has something to do with the pics!

Gee whiz KaGee. I didn't know that you were Egyptian. That's quite a monolith you constructed. Looks like it might have taken longer than the project you built it for.

About right Boom.

Took a couple of hours to construct. Only a couple of hours to pull the engine.

I'll reuse the lumber for a deck project.

But what do you do when you have nothing? I wanted to make sure that it would be sturdy enough. Cost of the lumber was $70.00.

Got the chain hoist from Harbor Freight Tools. It runs $40 when on sale. I bought one... local tool rental place wanted $35 a day.... what a rip!

Re: Engine Hoist

Forklifts are good, but my neighbor works for a tree service. He volunteered his cherry picker to get mine out. Sucked it outta there with ease, swung it around, extended the boom straight into my garage door and set it down where I needed it. Worked beautifully and only cost me a few cases of beer.
