Is there an average time in hours you shoud get out of a motor(johno 225 1989)befor things really start to wear out,eg start to lose compression and secondly I understand that the vro changes its pulse rate at differnt rpm but is there a rule of thumb or average rate per minute for say if the engine is at idle?

Most wear & tear comes from lack of use & poor manintenance/set-up and not hours. You will see an occasional post here with claims of 1-2,000 hours & runnin strong.

Re: Engine hours and yet another vro question

The "pulse rates" for a VRO pump varies with the year of manufacture. Read the ENGINE FAQ section, part F. for more info on the VRO and how it works.

At idle, most pumps will "pulse" or click about every 3-6 seconds. At full speed they are close to one a second. IF you hear a steady click, click, click sound, one after the other, then you have an internal problem or air in the fuel system. Usually you will also see a lot of blue smoke.
