Re: Engine I.D

Hello, Myles.

Your model number says it is a 1981 140hp Johnson.

It is a different block than the 85. I suppose it is possible that some 85 ignition and carb parts could be substituted, but why?? It may be possible to mount an 85 powerhead on the 140 leg, but why?

I also don't know why someone would tell you that it was an 85.

Maybe someone like Joe Reeves can give you some more positive identifiers.

Good luck. :)

Red sky that was very enlightening.that whole motor is a johnson!they must have put an evinrude cowl on it.i transferd the powerhead to the leg of my 1981 evinrude. put all the evinrude parts on the johnson.carbs, stator, everything!i didnt know they were so identical.it runs great!does this explain why the lower unitis silver?the rest of the motor is blue? the i.d plate says evinrude milwalkie wisconson.

My mistake, Myles.

The model number (E140trlcim) says Evinrude, but the serial number, (J0003049) says Johnson.

You are correct, though. They are the same crittur in different paint.

Good luck. :)
