Hi again, My SeaRay 180 3.0 with 6 hours "ran on" for a second or two while I had it out today. Any ideas why it would do this??

Could be a lot of things. You need to get more specific. Did you have fresh fuel? Did you pull the plugs to see if they were fouled? Did you fun all the fuel out last year and use Stabil? Do you have spark to all the cylinders? As you can see you need to post as much info as you can.

Hi Fireman, the boat is brand new..only 6 hours on her. It has fresh gas..its second tank. It ran fine during the day, just poped when I shut it off to let the kids swim. Starts right back up, and it did it once more, but then not again.

An 18' boat with a four-popper??? My sympathies!

Still under warranty? Have the dealer check timing, idle speed and mixture. They should have done that in the first place! Actually, come to think of it that's not a warranty issue...just poor setup by the dealer. They should fix the problem for free. If they'd have done their job, it wouldn't have been a problem in the first place. Did you get a pre-delivery checklist when you bought it? That's pretty much mandatory. It would show that the boat was thoroughly checked-out before they handed it over to you. Lack of one would tell me they didn't do squat.

I see you're from Wisconsin. Is it safe to assume you're not IN Wisconsin? Sometimes significant changes in climate and altitude will affect performance with carbureted motors. You might need to get it tweaked for your current circumstances.

(I'm assuming you have a 3L sterndrive. You might get more responses if you post in the "I/O or Inboard Engine" category. Maybe one of the moderators will move it there.)

Re: Engine kicked back?

Get it fixed NOW! I had run on with a new 4.3 Lt. Dealer said not to worry as a flap in the Y pipe would keep water out. What a crock. Mine didn't do it very often and I stupidly ignored the problem. Well, it's no longer under warranty and I'm spending $2500 for an engine rebuild and $1200 for new manifolds and risers. Mine also ran "fine" when I started it up, but the machinist rebuilding the engine showed me where water ingestion had fried my valves--but it didn't influence performance until it was too late. Also, it's real easy to tell when it's too late. Just do a compression check. Finally, I had one piece Mercury manifolds and that might have contributed to the problem.

Our old Baja (actually we still have it but rarely use it since we bought the big one)was a 184 Sunsport (18' 4") with a 3.0 liter Mercruiser and it will do just a tad under 50 MPH. Pretty good I thought!!!

Re: Engine kicked back?

are you using Regular87 or higher? (use what the owner's manual says) If not try fresh premium fuel and cool it down by idling for a few minutes with blower. Also, it is under warranty so don't take a brush off now...it's on them if something is wrong.

Re: Engine kicked back?

Higher octane gas might solve the diesling for the short term, long enough to get it back to your dealer in Wisconsin. I'm sure you won't want to use it forever, though.

Pardon my razzing. I should talk! The only boat I currently own is an old 14' runabout I planted in the ground for a sandbox. You have about the most bulletproof powerplant on the water once it's properly set up. They like to blow head gaskets over time if the timing is too advanced, so have it checked ASAP. Advanced timing would would also cause dieseling.
