Engine kicks into neutral at full speed

I recently bought a old 70-72 boat with a 40hp evinrude. Motor works great at 1/2 speed. But, when I take her to 3/4 or full speed ahead it seems to kick into neutrual. At this time I have to throttle her down, shift back into neutral and then back to forward. The cable that controls the transmission control is disconnected and you have to control at the motor. I don't know if this would make a difference. Any suggestions or tech info would be greatly appreciated. This old navy man is ready to go full speed ahead. Thanks.

Ha Ret: Sounds like you have a linkage problem. When you change the water pump impeller you disconnect the shift linkage. Take a look at the linkage were it heads down off the shift lever, I think there is a cotter pin that holds that gear looking rods together. Pull the cotter pin and move it one tooth over! Now Give Her full Speed A-HEAD ! Good Luck And God's Speed !

Red !

From what you describe, I think you've probably got a worn clutch dog and forward gear in the lower unit. If that's the problem and not a linkage adjustment, probably should replace prop and driveshaft seals at the same time. Worn clutch dog comes typically from shifting "oo gently". Shifting should be quick, not slowly done.
