Engine kicks out of gear?

Hello, I am a new member and I thought I might ask if any one might have a similar problem. I have a 1980 Johnson 15 hp. motor that runs, great, I can troll all day long at a slow speed however, when I increase the rpm the motor pops out of gear and this happens in forward or reverse any thoughts? thanks, Tom

Sounds like a shift "dog" might be wore in the lower unit and not getting it fully engaged if it is doing it in both forward and reverse.<br />Just my .02 worth.

If the engine is coming out of gear and you have to shift it back into forward or reverse to get it to go then spinner may be right. If when you give it throttle it just revs up and doesn't move but you bring the r's back to an idle and it does move it could be the propeller has a slipped hub.
