This darn Merc is driving me crazy. I've yet to get it to run right. I took it out on the lake tonight to see what it would do and for the second time it wouldn't run right.

I've noticed that it has a knock to it. It comes and goes. When it starts knocking it skips and bucks, sometime it will even kill itself. It has sheared the flywheel key twice now.

I was given this motor, so I know very little about it. The person who gave it to me said it was on a boat she bought. She didn't want anything to do with it because it was a Mercury. She had always had bad luck with them.

Apparently the guy who sold her the boat said it "ran fine." I take that at face value. Some people will say anything to get rid of it.

I'm wonding if there is a bad bearing in it or if one of the wrist pins are worn? I'm not really sure what to think. I want to fix it, but I don't want to throw a ton of money at it and still have a crappy motor.

Does anyone have a clue what the problem could be?

Thanks Everyone.

Re: Engine Knock

Knock is always bad, but fuel ping or Octane knock is correctable. Some times engine noise is confusing but time honored techniques can usually dispell the difference. I have heard of a detroit diesel that many thought the crank was out and it turned out to be a loose flywheel.

Re: Engine Knock

Pull the plugs and do a compression check. If that is ok, start looking at a reason for the misfire. Sounds like you have cylinders misfiring. Could be electrical, trigger, power pack, etc.

Link and sync. If timing is off could duplicate this situation.

Re: Engine Knock

A knock that comes and goes is usually timing or ignition related. Replace flywheel key again, torque flywheel, and check timing. How long does it run before the knock starts, or is it completely random?

Re: Engine Knock

It runs okay when it's running normal.

The first think I thought was the timing also.

I just put a new switch box on it because the first one got fried. My fault. I put power to a wire I shouldn't have when I was trying to determine which wires did what.

I also put a new set of plugs in it.

I didn't torque the flywheel to spec.. I just tighten it up because I didn't' figure it was that big of a deal. I've never torqued one down before and I've never had a problem. Maybe that's it thought.

I definitely need to get a manual for this thing, just for specs. if nothing else. I'm watching one on eBay. I'm just waiting for it to end.

Thanks for all the help guys. Much appreciated.
