Is gas cap tight? Here, Autozone or Advanced Auto can read the codes for you - free.

Re: engine light icon on

I have a 02 durango small v-8 check engine light came on and turned out to be a downstream O2 sensor....Dealer told me if the light is on and stays on its OK to drive on(at least the 15 miles to the dealer) if the light would have been flashing instead on staying on thats when you dont want to drive on it....
Its probably just a sensor going bad.

Most "check engine" alarms are for emissions control items. Could be anything from a loose gas cap to a failed mass air sensor. Always costs bux to get someone else to fix it. :(

I bought an OBD code reader on e-bay. Not as good as what the professionals use but not bad either.

I think you can check the codes using the odometer, providing its digital, using the key in the ignition. Turn the key to run, do not start, and back to off (do this twice) and then turn it to run again, this should show any codes present ending with pdone. Hope this is clear enough to help.

Glad I could help. Heres what the code says, from dodgetruckworld.com,

P0456 (M) Evap Leak Monitor Small Leak
Detected
Leak has been detected in the evaporative system.

Not entirely sure what that would include but at least it gives you a place to start.

Re: engine light icon on

This is a C/P - sounds like the gas cap.

A 0.020 leak has been detected in the evaporative system. See TSB's 25-001-02A, 18-002-03 and 25-004-01. Also, possible faulty or loose gas cap.

(Also see Notes in P0455 above). Does customer regularly commute on a steep grade (down hill grades in excess of 10%? Has the Leak Detection Pump Operation and Diagnosis booklet (Publication No. 81-170-000606) been used to assist in the diagnosis?

Review and if necessary, perform TSB 18-010-02. Be sure to completely read the TSB. The fix for the condition is a PCM replacement, not a reprogramming of the controller. Be sure that there is not any leaks in the system. This TSB applies in a very limited number of cases and usually in mountainous regions. TSB 18-010-02 Is a PCM replacement correct an erroneous MIL illumination for SAE P0456 that sets when driven on steep grades.
