it probably holds about 4 quarts. Are you sure it all drained out? Start with a couple quarts and check the dipstick.

I concur 100%.

(BTW, I am wearing my 1994 AFC Central Champs t-shirt as I type this. Gotta get me a new Steelers shirt, as they have won 2 Super Bowls since I got this shirt!)

Thanks that was my plan but wanted a ball park..

So what happened..I was running the boat everything was going fine then I felt a little loss of power looked down and saw zero oil pressure so quickly cut the engine off.. A little white smoke and I checked the engine temp and it was not over heated. Got towed in..found the oil plug came out .. I guess vibrated loose..

Now I got the plug back in and added oil and now it won't crank. So am I seized up?
Could it be somthing less serious?

What a repair like that gonna run me?

If it ran without oil for more than just a minute, you need to pull it and check the bearings. I see that it wont even crank so we know thats not a good thing. probably going to need a crank kit and bearings. I would if it was me. no point is going to all that trouble and then hoping.

On a side note, you can order a low oil light and shut down from summitt racing. this is very easy to install and can (will) save you in just such a situation. they have them set at 20 psi so a light comes on and then shuts the engine down. there is a override if it is faulty. This item has saved many 10's of thousands of dollars in race engines for us alone.

you would what?

Pull the motor and put a crank kit in it. unless there is no sign of any abnormal wear on the bearings, then just replace the bearings because your already there. It really doesnt take long to hurt a motor. then i may run for awhile with not problems, untill it spins a rod and then if your luck it wont go through the side of the block or pan.
Just trying to error on the side of caution. better to spend a little now than alot later.

also remember to us a micrometer on the crank and the rods with the bearings installed and torqued. you can also use "plastigauge" it works really well.

Shutting a motor down while on plane can cause water to rush up the exhaust and into the cylinders. If that happens, the motor can't compress the water, and it won't crank over. If only one or two cyls are full, it'll turn a little then stop. So pulling the spark plugs and trying to turn the motor over will get the water out. Then you can decide if you want to pull the motor and do all that other stuff. I would personally get it running, see what the oil pressure is, and if it doesn't bang and clank, run it. But that's just me.

How did you happen to notice that the oil plug fell out and all the oil was out of the engine.
Did the engine make funny noises while running? Slow down, or did you see the gauge drop to nothing, if so, for how long.

i was cruising along on plane and felt a hesitation like a slight loss in power and looked down and saw oil pressure gauge at 0 so i cut the engine. then i saw a little bit of white smoke out of the engine compartment..
i used the digital temp gauge and checked all the parts of the engine and nothing was over 200..

You have a choice.
Put the plug in, put oil in and run it.
Or take it out, dissassemble and inspect everything.
Even an oil sample won't help. The oil fell out.
And why would that plug fall out. You don't change the oil by removing the drain plug do you?

I put the plug back in and filled it with 4 quarts of oil and it barely cranks.. only a quick noise and then nothing...

Who knows, take it apart and evaluate what is wrong. None of us here can see, touch, or hear the engine. And guessing doesn't count.
