engine missing after heat soak

1996 Four Winns Sundowner with a Volvo Penta 5.0 (Ford 302)
Motor runs fine on initial startup and first run out on the lake. After stopping and sitting a while, it will be difficult to crank and miss, pop, and bog when taking off. This problem will continue for a couple minutes and sometimes engine will die completely. Once it clears up, the boat runs fine until I stop and let it sit again. It also surges at idle and will often go dead when warm. Fuel filter was changed at the beginning of the season. This has the Ford electronic injection system.
It behaves like a vapor lock problem.
Any suggestions on where to start? This is my first boat and many things are new to me compared to the cars I've worked on over the years.

Open the hatch when you let the engine cool off the next time and see if it still happens.

You might want to get an EEC-IV code reader for 1981-1995 Ford vehicles and see if there are any codes stored by the computer.

Re: engine missing after heat soak

Okay here is an update. I tried opening the engine cover while sitting to let the engine cool. This certainly seems to help the situation. Very little hesitation but still somewhat difficult to crank and idle continues to surge. The missing and bogging was gone under power however.
I also put a beer can coozy over my fuel filter to insulate it to see if that helped but didn't seem to make any difference. (yes I know there is a "you might be a redneck" joke in that somewhere). :D

Personally, I think that's pretty inventive! Now, if you had pulled an insulating sleeve off of your fuel filter to keep your beer cold...THEN you would most certainly be a redneck! Then again, at least you'd have a cold beer...
