went out yesterday and hit something in the water, spun my hub ( 1993 200hp evinrude ), had the hub fixed and reinstalled the prop and now there is a noticeable clunk when the engine is put into forward or reverse. Also the rear of the middle section of the motor was so hot I could not rest my hand on it for more than a second, lower unit and engine were fine temp wise. Any body have any ideas what might be wrong?? Maybe a bearing , or is there a clutch that could have become damaged when I hit whatever in the water help!!!

Tux..... Remove the propeller. Grab the prop shaft and pull/push it to see what in/out play you have there. You should have roughly 1/16" of play. If you have an excessive amount of play (1/4", 3/8") then I would think, yes, something was damaged when you hit whatever it was.

However, it is more likely that you neglected to install the main thrust washer in back of the prop which would allow the prop to slam forwards and backwards approximately 1/2" or so with each shifting.

The overheating bit might present somewhat of a mystery unless you did not in effect hit "something" but rather ran through a sandbar at high speed, drawing up a good amount of sand/debris into the pump area. I'd suggest dropping the lower unit to inspect the water pump and related passages. Good Luck.....
